Versatile music-style database of over 4,000 instrument and drum phrases.

Yamaha QY100 was initially released in 2000, and in 2011 Yamaha has released firmware update for Main ROM to version 1.37 which is now the latest and probably the final release for this great device. However the update process proved to be somewhat challenging. With that said we would like to provide our instructions for the effort.

Please note, in our process we are following the instructions originally listed at Yamaha Web site. We just made the original instructions more clear, understandable, and easier to follow.

Before we begin

CAUTION: This process will overwrite ALL user data on the Yamaha QY100, and will re-set the device to factory settings. Make sure you back up everything. Also, the process may "brick" (or cause damage to) the device, please proceed at your own risk.

Verify Current Version of Firmware

Turn the QY100 on while simultaneously pressing [AMP SIMULATOR], [PARAMETER], and [SONG] buttons.

Release those buttons and the screen will display Main ROM version.

If the displayed version is 1.37, then you already have the latest firmware therefore do not have to do anything. However if your version is less then 1.37, you may decide to proceed further. Please turn off your device for now.

Download Firmware and MIDI Player

All the below instructions are for Windows 10

The Yamaha QT100 firmware version 1.37 can be downloaded here.

We will use free MidiPlayer 5 to upload firmware to Yamaha, it can be downloaded here.

After the download, please re-name file extension of MidiPlayer 5 file to zip, and unzip somewhere.

MIDI to USB cable is needed

For this project we will be using MIDI to USB cable with the name "OTraki USB MIDI Cable Converter 2.0 3.0 USB Interface to IN-OUT MIDI". It can be purchased on Amazon here.

Connecting MIDI Cable

Please connect MIDI Cable. Note, the "IN" MIDI connector on the cable should be plugged to "OUT" MIDI interface on Yamaha QT100, and "OUT" MIDI connector on the cable should be plugged to "IN" MIDI interface on Yamaha QT100. USB should be plugged in to your Windows 10 PC computer. "Host Select" selector on Yamaha QT100 should be switched to "MIDI" position.

Checking Connectivity

Once Yamaha is connected to Windows 10, Windows should detect Yamaha QY100 as USB MIDI Interface. Please launch MIDI Player by executing file MidiPlayer5\MidiPlayer.exe. This Midi Player software does not have installer. It may through an error message, but that is OK, please ignore that error. Once launched, please click on "setting icon" identified as figure #1 at the below image, that will open settings window for you.

Please set configuration screen as listed on the provided image (figure #2), you should select USB MIDI interface option for both MIDI in and MIDI out settings. Once done, click on OK button (figure #3).

Plug your headset into the Yamaha QY100, turn on device, and try to press some sound buttons on Yamaha, you should see related buttons pressed on MidiPlayer 5 virtual keyboard. Once done, click on some keys on the displayed MidiPlayer 5 virtual keyboard, you should hear related sounds in the headset. This means that connection is working both ways, in and out of Yamaha QY100. Turn off the Yamaha.

Initiate Firmware Upload

Assuming the connection is working correctly, in MidiPlayer 5 please select your firmware midi file from the previously downloaded and unpacked zip archive (figure #4). Please review property of Firmware MIDI file, make sure you disable loops, auto-plays, repetitions, etc., make sure you have removed any other MIDI files form the play list. Once you are ready, please turn ON the QY100 while pressing [m7(9)], [mM7], and [m7(11)] (see below image), then release the buttons.
