Enterprise Custom Java/XML Portal

Background

Our Client, one of the largest manufacture of consumer electronics in the world was looking to consolidate all of its US-based Web assets into one dynamic Web Site (Portal) that supposes to uniformly reflect the company's innovative product and service offerings. In the course of doing business, the company's various divisions have created many of related web sites and applications that may have served its purpose singularly but have not met its objectives uniformly, causing lost opportunities in obtaining new customers and cross promoting other product lines to the existing customer base.

Goals

• Performance – In case, where millions of users are accessing web site, performance is the key. There are many costly approaches to achieve necessary performance and handle huge amount of data such as investing in to expensive equipment, optimizing application, implementing load balancing and using combinations of dozens of other techniques. We have decided to create solution the way it would not need all these efforts.
• Accuracy – Web Site is one of the key tools of the Corporate Marketing strategy, so the quality of the end-product(Web Page) should be a priority. It means, no broken links (this is big issue to resolve when dealing with more then 10000 of web pages). There are always chances for human errors, and the only way to ensure quality is to automate the entire process of creating Web Pages.
• Expendability – Multiple divisions are always want to improve their portions of the Web Site or to create and publish new marketing campaigns, documents, ideas, prices, rebates. Designed system needs to be flexible enough to handle all incoming requests.

Solution

The proposed solution was to create a Custom Application using Java and XML engine - Custom XML Web Portal. Data was supposed to be extracted from multiple sources and then converted and transformed in to HTML pages. Due to the extreme dead line pressure the entire team had to work sleeplessly for several months. As a result of hard work, the solution has been implemented and successfully launched within the given time frame, scope and a budget.
